DASP scams: Safeguarding your Departing Australia Superannuation Payments

Departing Australia Superannuation Payments (DASP) offer a critical service, allowing people leaving Australia to access their super. Unfortunately, this process can be a target for scams that exploit people who are unfamiliar with the DASP system.

Being aware of these scams will help you protect your hard-earned money and personal details.

Common DASP scams to watch out for

Here are some tricks that scammers may use to access your super:

  • Fast-track offers: Claims like ‘We can apply for your DASP and get it faster for just $100’ are common fraudulent tactics. Remember, DASP applications online are completely free.
  • Fake portals: Some websites mimic the official ATO DASP portal to steal sensitive information.
  • Impersonation attempts: Fraudsters may pose as ATO or immigration department officials, trying to deceive you by appearing authoritative. ATO impersonation voice calls sometimes involve a computer-generated ‘robot voice’.
  • Social media ploys: Ads on social media promising super withdrawal services often catch people off guard and lead them into a scam.

Spotting the signs of DASP scams

Scammers can pose as legitimate agents or entities, attempting to coax you into giving up sensitive information or paying unnecessary fees for DASP processing. Here are the key giveaways of a DASP scam:

  • Offers to apply on your behalf: Be cautious if someone offers to handle your super payout application. The DASP process is straightforward and can be completed independently via the ATO website using their DASP online application system.
  • Requests for sensitive details: If asked for your passwords or myGov login details, it’s likely a scam. Always keep this information private. CareSuper and other funds may require your passport or visa details to identify you prior to payment.  Only ever share ID documents through official, secure channels.
  • Promises of fast tracking for a fee: There’s no need to pay anyone to speed up your payment—it's not only unnecessary, but fraudulent and often a sign of a scam. The DASP process follows official ATO timelines and is usually completed within 28 days of your application, with no fees outside of relevant tax applications.
  • Impersonating communication: Be wary of fake emails or messages claiming to be from CareSuper or the ATO, especially if they demand immediate action under threat of account closure or loss of funds. You can always call us on 1800 005 166 to double check if an email was from us.

Steps to protect yourself

To make sure your super funds and identity remain secure, follow these protective steps:

  • Use official channels: Apply for DASP through the official portal at www.ato.gov.au/dasp. This portal offers secure and accurate processing of your application. The ATO also offers paper application forms.
  • Keep information confidential: Maintain the security and privacy of your personal details, myGov, super account, and identification information.
  • Avoid third-party assistance: Never pay anyone to apply for DASP on your behalf. Trustworthy advice is available through trusted channels (for example, the ATO), without the need for external parties. If you have any questions, contact us
  • Verify communications: If you're unsure how to begin your application or you receive unexpected messages about your super, DASP or otherwise, contact us. If a person has called you and you think they may be impersonating an organisation, then hang up and call that organisation on a publicly-listed number to confirm that any contact is legitimate.
