Insurance through super - protection that grows with you
Insurance through super helps protect you financially if you can’t work due to illness or injury, or if something happens to you and you need financial support. It’s there for the unexpected - so you don’t have to manage everything on your own when life doesn’t go to plan.
Why would I need it at my age?
Life can be unpredictable, even when you're young and healthy. Consider what would happen if:
- You're in a car accident and can't work for six months during recovery
- A workplace injury affects your ability to do your job
- You develop a serious illness that stops you earning income
- You have an accident that causes a permanent disability.
Insurance may provide financial support during these times, rather than relying entirely on savings, family support, or Centrelink.
For many members, holding insurance through super can be a cost-effective way to have cover. Because it’s provided through a group arrangement, it can be simpler to manage than separate policies outside super. And because insurance fees are paid from your super balance rather than your take-home pay, it doesn't directly impact your weekly budget.

How to get cover now
If you don’t have cover and would like insurance, you may be able to opt in early to Default cover through Member Online. Default cover is age-based cover and is designed to provide a minimum level of cover which changes as you get older. The type and amount of Default cover provided depends on your age and employer. The cost you pay for that cover will change as you get older.
You can find more information and check whether you’re eligible in the relevant insurance guide.
