7 ways to thrive in retirement
Drawing from our conversations with numerous retirees, we’ve compiled seven tips that have helped them fully embrace and enjoy this phase of their lives.
1. Look for new opportunities
Now is the perfect time to explore new or old interests and hobbies.
Whether joining a new sports team, learning a musical instrument or language, or delving into other creative pursuits, embracing your passions can bring a sense of fulfilment and purpose.
It’s also a terrific way to keep your mind and body active and healthy so you can fully embrace post-work life.
2. Stay connected
Strong social connections are the foundation of a happy and meaningful life.
Working with community groups, volunteering, staying in touch with friends and family, and taking time to nurture meaningful relationships offers a much-needed sense of belonging and support. It also provides a solid framework for planning and organising your days, so there’s always something to look forward to.
So, schedule that weekly coffee catchup, host dinner parties with friends and family, or join your local photography, beekeeping or book club. No matter what you do, just make sure you’re doing it with people who bring you joy.
3. Prioritise your health and wellbeing
Staying healthy is crucial at any age, but it’s especially important when you’re enjoying life after work. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and taking care of your mental health can make a big difference in how you feel and live.
Remember, keeping your body strong and your mind sharp opens up more possibilities for fun and fulfilment.

4. Set realistic expectations
Adjusting to a new lifestyle and routine takes time, so set realistic expectations about what you want and expect from life after work.
Remember, there is no ‘right’ way to retire — only ‘the right way for you.’
So, think about what’s important to you and discuss it with your partner, family, friends and financial adviser. After all, they’re a big part of your retirement and will play a crucial role in helping you find a balance that works for you.
5. Plan for financial security
The most common question we hear about retirement is, ‘Will I have enough?’ It’s understandable. No one wants to retire under financial stress or to run out of retirement savings too soon.
Creating a solid financial plan as part of your overall retirement strategy is vital to transitioning to retirement with confidence.
If you’re new to retirement, some things to think about include:
- What will my weekly expenses be?
- Do I have outstanding debts (mortgage etc)?
- Will I downsize or keep my current home?
- Will I keep working part-time?
- Do I plan to travel?
If you’ve been retired for a while you may need to think about things like:
- Will taking lump sums out of my super to pay for bigger expenses impact how long my super will last?
- Will market volatility impact my savings?
- Have I set up my beneficiaries properly?
You should also speak to a professional financial adviser. Their job is to help you understand your current financial situation and plan for your goals — even if you’re not 100% sure what those goals are!
6. Explore new horizons
Perhaps the biggest draw of leaving work behind is the freedom to travel and explore the world. Whether it’s a dream holiday to Paris, New York or London or a budget road trip closer to home, travel is a fun and exciting way to experience unfamiliar places, meet new people, and embrace new challenges.
7. Give back
Volunteers are the glue that holds communities together, so it’s no surprise that thousands of Australians get immense satisfaction out of giving back each year. With a lifetime of skills and experience behind you, now is the perfect time for you to make a difference.
