Why insurance through your super makes sense
What is insurance through super?
Insurance through super means you’re covered for life’s unexpected events — like illness, injury or death — with insurance fees paid directly from your super account. It’s a convenient way to stay protected without impacting your day-to-day budget.
CareSuper offers three types of cover:
- Death cover: Provides a lump sum benefit if you pass away or become terminally ill.1
- Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) cover: Provides you with a lump sum benefit if you become totally and permanently disabled and can no longer work.
- Income protection cover: Pays a regular income if you’re temporarily unable to work due to illness or injury.
1 You may be eligible to receive your death benefit sooner if you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness that’s likely to result in your death within 24 months. Terminal illness cover is included in your death cover at no extra cost.
Why choose insurance through CareSuper?
CareSuper’s insurance is designed to be flexible, affordable and tailored to your needs. Here’s why it works for so many members:
- Convenience: Insurance fees are paid from your super account, so there’s no need to manage separate bills.
- Value: As a CareSuper member, you have access to group insurance rates, which are generally cheaper than insuring yourself individually.
- Flexibility: You can adjust your cover as life changes — increase it, reduce it, or tailor it to suit your goals.
- Support: Access to tools like the insurance needs calculator and wellbeing services through 360Health.
- Expert guidance: Speak with a financial planner to help you make informed decisions.
Why it matters
Insurance through super isn’t just about ticking a box — it’s about peace of mind and real support when life takes an unexpected turn. Take one CareSuper member who called seeking early access to $10,000 from their super due to financial hardship.
Thanks to the thoughtful questioning of Customer Service Officer James, it became clear that the member was permanently unable to work and receiving a disability support pension — and had held insurance cover at the time they stopped working.
Instead of accessing a small portion of their super, James helped them begin the process of claiming on their insurance, potentially unlocking their full super balance. It was a solution the member never would have known was available without James’ care and attention.
This type of outcome shows just how valuable insurance through super can be — not just in theory, but in practice. And it’s why reviewing your cover, or adding it if you haven’t already, is one of the smartest things you can do for your future.

Starting a new job or growing your family?
If you're on parental leave, you might be eligible for a fee premium pause — helping you keep your insurance cover without the cost during a time when every dollar counts. It can also be a good chance to check your cover and make sure it’s keeping up with life’s changes.
