SMSF or Direct Investment option - which is right for you?
While we generally think of financial stress as a barrier to paying bills, it also significantly impacts your relationships and mental health. This can lead to sadness and depression, reduced motivation, and underperformance at work.
Thankfully, there are steps you can take to feel more in control of your finances, so you can get your life back on track when things go wrong.
Direct Investment option (DIO)
With CareSuper’s DIO, you can choose some of your own investments while still enjoying the benefits of being part of an award-winning industry fund. Unlike a self-managed super fund (SMSF), CareSuper remains the trustee — so we take care of the legal and administrative requirements while you focus on the investment decisions that matter to you.
What you can access through a DIO:
- Shares, exchange traded funds (ETFs), listed investment companies (LICs), term deposits and cash
- Real-time trading and market information
- Independent research and investment tools
- A simple online platform to manage it all
Considerations
- You’ll need to be comfortable making your own investment decisions
- Direct investment requires more time and involvement
- Additional fees and costs may apply
Self-managed super funds (SMSFs)
Some people consider setting up an SMSF to take full control of their super. An SMSF can have up to six members, and all members are also trustees (or directors of a corporate trustee). This means they’re legally responsible for managing the fund, making investment decisions, and ensuring compliance with super and tax laws.
While you can outsource some administration, the responsibility ultimately rests with you. There are also running costs, which is why SMSFs are generally better suited to those with larger balances and the time, knowledge, and advice to manage the fund effectively.
Consideration
SMSFs can be complex. It’s essential to seek professional financial, legal and tax advice before deciding if an SMSF is right for you. Read our SMSF factsheet for more information.
Finding the right fit
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Whether you’d prefer CareSuper to manage your investments, want to take a more active role through direct investment, or are considering an SMSF, the right choice depends on your goals, circumstances and how involved you want to be.
At CareSuper, we’re here to support you in making decisions that give you confidence about your future.
