More super for low-income earners
If you earn up to $45,000 a year, these reforms will give your super a boost without you having to do a thing. While the changes don't start until July 2027, here's what you need to know.
What is LISTO?
LISTO stands for Low Income Superannuation Tax Offset. It's a government payment that helps low-income earners save more for retirement by refunding some of the tax paid on your employer's super contributions.
If you're eligible, the ATO currently pays up to $500 a year straight into your super account. No forms, no hassle.
What's changing?
From 1 July 2027, two big changes will take effect:
- The income threshold for LISTO is increasing from $37,000 to $45,000.
- The maximum top-up amount is increasing from $500 to $810 per year.
So if you earn $45,000 or less, you could qualify for this payment.
Do I need to do anything?
No action is required because the ATO will automatically pay LISTO into your super account after you lodge your tax return for the 2027-28 financial year. However, a few smart steps can help you make the most of these changes:
- Check your income – Will you be earning under $45,000 (or likely to) in the 2027-28 financial year?
- Check your contributions - Are you making before-tax contributions (like employer contributions or salary sacrifice)? LISTO only applies to tax paid on before-tax contributions, so knowing this helps you understand if you'll benefit.
- Confirm your Tax File Number (TFN) – Make sure your super fund has your correct TFN so you don't miss out on any payments.
- Think about your super strategy – Small actions now, like making salary sacrifice contributions, can help you make the most of these reforms.
- Get advice if you need it – Not sure how this fits your situation? Book a meeting with one of our Superannuation Advisers to review your super, contributions, and what changes like this might mean for you.
Why this matters
This is an important reform and one CareSuper has proudly advocated for through our peak bodies. More Australians will now benefit from LISTO, helping to make the super system fairer.
